The Interrogation (Lyrics and music: Tim Hunter) We always come for you at night And wake you up with blinding lights. Our faces never smile There are no witnesses, no trials. You’re wiped out, vaporised And your existence is denied. Then it’s Room 101, comrade If you survive. But the lucky ones always die. It was your daughter who betrayed you She was listening at the keyhole. You were talking in your sleep And she told the patrols. You’re a stain that’s gotta be wiped clean A flaw in the machine. In Room 101 comrade, No one can hear you scream. Do you know what I mean? It was only a matter of time Before we found out your crime We’re always watching you Should you step out of line. We’ll torture you until your mind Is just a hollow, empty shell. We’ll crush you and torment you Really put you through hell. You’ll confess to everything And you’ll betray everyone. Then you’ll be ready for Room101. Room 101.

Brainwashed 02:18
Brainwashed Sometimes I dream about life outside this hell Sometimes I dream about life outside this cell. My mind is under a spell Just what’s going on I can’t tell My mind is under a spell. Sometimes when these four walls are all that I can see That’s when I wonder what it must be like to be free My mind’s in chains Don’t even know my own name My mind’s in chains I’ve been Brainwashed, Brainwashed, Brainwashed Don’t know how long I’ve been locked away Don’t know anymore if it’s night or day. I told them everything and I betrayed all my friends Now I’m sitting around just waiting for the end I’m going insane My mind’s been drained I’m going insane I’ve been Brainwashed, Brainwashed, Brainwashed
3.
Mr Clean 01:42
Mr Clean (Lyrics and Music : Tim Hunter) Well Mr Clean is always seen with a toothpaste advert smile Mr Clean is so smooth all that could offend has been removed. Always sings those stupid love songs all about life in a world of sugar and spice Where the sun always shines and everything is so nice Well he lives a life of ease and never ever sees the darker side Where some people are down and at the end of the line
4.
The Key 03:07
The Key (lyrics and music: Tim Hunter) Somehow I know I’ve been here before A long time ago I set foot on this shore Still don’t know what brought me here So scared , so full of fear I’ve stumbled on the door to an ancient time And I’m not too sure just what lies behind Something lost in another life Something lost inside Isolation , trapped forever more A prisoner in there And I hold the key to the door
5.
New Horizon (Tim Hunter: lyrics and music) From the ashes of this Burnt Out Crazy life Spread your wings and fly into the misty night New Horizon, New Tomorrow, as the sun sets forget the sorrow Watch the sun go down then you’re free at last Take a journey through the past New Horizon, New Horizon A broken mind that only time is gonna mend From the ruins of a life close to the end New Horizon, New Tomorrow, as the sun sets forget the sorrow Watch the sun go down then you’re free at last Take a journey through the past New Horizon, New Horizon Standing at the crossroads can’t decide which way to go You can’t turn back that’s the only thing you know
6.
Freedom 03:29
Freedom (lyrics and music : Tim Hunter) Woke up with the rising sun Got to be on my way The new day has just begun Everything I own is packed in my bags Still a long way to go No time for lookin’ back There’s so much to see and so much to do Life is so short soon another day is through I escaped from the dark side of life Freedom - each day is something new Out here time moves so slow Burning in the heat out on this lonely road Lookin’ out standing on this beach A long way across the waves there’s a place I’m trying to reach Everything I own is packed in my bags Still a long way to go No time for lookin’ back There’s so much to see and so much to do Life is so short soon another day is through I escaped from the dark side of life Freedom - each day is something new
7.
Put Your Music Where Your Music Is (Lyrics and Music: Tim Hunter) You say you’re gonna be a star But I know you’ll never get that far ‘cos you’ll never do it Just talk about it So Put Your Music Where Your Mouth Is Don’t say listen to my tape I say son you’ll have to wait ‘cos you’ll never do it Just talk about it So Put Your Music Where Your Mouth Is It ain’t just the music it’s everything else It’s everybody it ain’t just yourself Survive get yourself a gig Play live if you want to be big ‘cos you’ll never do it Just talk about it So Put Your Music Where Your Mouth Is
8.
The Stakes Are High (lyrics and music: Tim Hunter) I’m a gambler and I loose more than I can afford I’ve spent everything and now no-one will lend me more I’ve sold everything even sold my diamond ring Can’t you see the mess I’m in? The letter said I’d better get right out of town I owe so much money now they’re gonna gun me down I just got divorced she left because I spent it all on a racehorse You don’t mess round with these guys when you owe them cash they cut you down to size
9.
Vintage Years (Lyrics and Music: Tim Hunter) On a Saturday I like to go and watch the local brass band play Or I might go and watch the village cricket team Going for a stroll weed the garden or I’ll have a game of bowls Or play croquet out on the village green Sundays are grand, shake the vicar’s hand or chat for a while to his wife Creamcakes and tea sat on the setee this is the life Vintage Years are coming back to me Monacle in my eye still wear the old school tie Eton Oxbridge Education sure to get me by I still remember the Vintage Years Kettle’s on the boil if you want a cup of tea Let’s chat about how it used to be
10.
Dreams 02:28
Dreams (Lyrics and music: Tim Hunter) Forgotten place an unknown place The Dream world is so strange Nothing makes sense so meaning less everything is so insane And there’s no one to explain – open your eyes meet the sunrise And the dream will be gone. Chorus Trying to hold on to a dream is like trying to catch hold of the wind As it blows Catch hold of a moving stream We’ll never know it seems what goes on in our dreams You dream you’re trapped and you’re scared and the fear seems so real You can’t escape but then you wake but what did it all mean What did it reveal. open your eyes meet the sunrise And the dream will be gone. Chorus Just a memory of a dream And no-one knows what it means When you wake it won’t be long The memory of your dream will be gone

about

NB Mixed Quality - some tracks demo quality only.

One for the die-hard fans only, who might wonder what kind of music I was doing in the 70s. This album features some reworked tracks and some original recordings from the late 70s.

On Friday 10th December 1976 I went, for the first time, into a recording studio in Leicester to record some demos of songs. The studio was in a suburb of Leicester, Glenfield, and built in the back of someone’s garage. I remember thinking I’d like to have my own studio eventually.

These were the 5 tracks I recorded:

The Interrogation,Brainwashed,Mr Clean,The Key, Burnt Out Life

Anyway its Friday 10th of December again – but it’s 45 years later in 2021. Today I’m in my own studio in my garage and I’m releasing 10 tracks from that period (including the 5 from the 10.12.76 session).

4 of the tracks are totally re-recorded, 6 are original recordings.

One track, 'Mr Clean' is good enough quality from the original recordings to feature on this mini album. Three others had fairly muffled vocals and didn't really do justice to the songs so they've been reworked: 'The Interrogation', 'The Key' and 'Burnt Out Life'.

I had a version of 'Brainwashed' recorded in 1979 - not that much later and I've included that to complete the 5 tracks from the 10.12.76 session.

4 other tracks are also from original recordings: 'Vintage Years', 'The Stakes are High' and 'Dreams' were recorded the following year in 1977. A previously unreleased track from 1979 is also included: 'Put Your Music Where Your Mouth Is'

One further track ;'Freedom' originally demo'd in 1977 is also reworked.

Anyway, I’m wondering what would have happened if I'd pursued the type of song writing I was attempting on the 10.12.76 session. It’d have been pretty unfashionable (for the late 70s) – I must say. I was, at the time influenced by groups like Wishbone Ash (and Be-Bop Deluxe) - and some people say there are some Camel influences.

I simplified my style from then on - mainly to be able to go into a studio and quickly record tracks to a high standard. It was also in keeping with the style that started to prevail i.e. 'pub rock' or 'new wave'. I started off , though, trying to do a more prog sound.

In those days it would have been a dream come true to have (like is widely available now) your own studio with unlimited tracks and different instruments (and drum machines) etc. In the 70s the cost of buying e.g. a TEAC 4 track reel to reel and mixer to set up a home studio would have been almost like a whole year's average salary for someone.

Why ‘Strategy Is’? I took a book and randomly selected the first two words I came across. Some of this material ended up being released under the names of 'Mad Dog' and 'Everyone Else' - but I thought I'd use the original first name for this 70s compilation.
